Summary

Phantoms of Ruthaer by Jason McDonald is set in the same fantasy world as the author’s Cayn trilogy. The locations and characters are different. The only character mentioned in this book from the Cayn trilogy is Jasper Thredd. He is a mage and a member of Damage, Inc. but does not appear in this novel. Jasper has some connection to the trio of Hector, Dave and Robert. Robert is another character mentioned but not met in this novel.

At the beginning of the novel, Hector bails Dave out of jail. Damage, Inc. has business in Ozera, but a job in Ruthaer comes first. They pick up Aislinn and Hummingbird and sail to Ruthaer. Aislinn is from Ruthaer and is responding to the request of Tallinn, the sea ranger she knew as a girl. Once they get to Ruthaer, they face the mystery of what happened to the monks. Lord Francis and Father Blackwood helps them. There is a fog over the town. They fight ghosts, vampires, and spiders to get to the heart of the mystery. A ghost ship and the mysterious Count Dodz complicate the mystery. There are plenty of more thrills and reversals as Damage, Inc. uncovers mystery after mystery.

Recommendation

Phantoms of Ruthaer by Jason McDonald is a great genre mash-up novel. There is a mystery, a ghost story, and a fantasy adventure in the novel. The bounty hunting idea is like the Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski. Damage Inc. is paid for killing magical creatures like the Witcher. The mystery is hard to solve, and the ghosts are real in this adventure. It also reminded me of John Carter from Mars concerning Hector, Dave, and Robert’s interaction with this fantasy world. I want to see more adventures with Damage, Inc.

I received this novel as a beta reader. After they release the last book, I will update this post as necessary.

My review of Blood of Cayn, the Cayn Trilogy Book #3. It’s the thrilling conclusion of the Cayn Trilogy. The plague has returned. Will Xandor’s crew find the cure or will everyone die?

My review of City of Cayn the Cayn Trilogy Book #2. It’s a suspenseful adventure. The plague story begun in the first book takes our heroes to Cherigov, a human city overrun by orcs. They must defeat the orc king, or the plague will devastate the land.

My review of Son of Cayn, the Cayn Trilogy Book #1. Xandor the ranger’s mission is to infiltrate a caravan that is smuggling soap. Soap? Yes, soap. Xandor’s crew must determine where and why the soap is being smuggled.

Summary

In the previous two novels, Xandor and his crew have tracked the source of the plague to shipments of soap going to the orc city of Cherigov. Windrider Yana surveys the orc fortifications at Cherigov with her glider. She reports her findings to Lord Commander Geoffrey Ferguson of the Iron Tower. Ferguson plans to attack the keep outside the city and send a rescue force to recover Sabe’s men who are looking for the Tear of Havel in Cherigov. Sehraine the elf is Yana’s friend and knows more about the plague than what she has told Xandor.

Xandor’s crew are in Cherigov looking for Sabe and the Tear of Havel. Xandor crew are Grendel, the half-orc, Chert, the dwarf healer, Sacha, the princess of the enemy country of the Kral, and Skyld, Sasha’s bodyguard. They are opposed by Bregu Kraagor, The Orc King of Cherigov. His helpers are Marko the prince, Sasha’s brother, Kourash, a dragon kin, and Gregori, a powerful mage.

Sacha’s plan is to have Grendel take the Rite of Passage, defeat King Kraagor in single combat and have Grendel take over as the Orc King to open the city to the allies. Sacha’s plans, Xandor’s plans, and Ferguson’s plans do not go as planned. There are many reversals of fortune in Cherigov. The key to stopping the plague is found at Sabe’s estate and at Sehraine’s elf village. It will take all our heroes might to defeat the power behind all the events that have happened so far. This is the conclusion of the Cayn trilogy.

Recommendation

The Cayn trilogy combined fantasy, mystery, and military action well. I liked all the heroes and despised the villains. The action never lets up. I understood who each of the characters was, though it would have helped to have a written cast of the many characters for the series since I did not read the novels back to back. My only issue was the ending. I feel like I missed something or the last mystery remaining will lead to a sequel. It didn’t feel complete to me.

My review of Son of Cayn Book #1 of the Cayn Trilogy. Xandor the ranger’s mission is to infiltrate a caravan that is smuggling soap. Soap? Yes, soap. Xandor’s crew must determine where and why the soap is being smuggled.

My review of City of Cayn Book #2 of the Cayn Trilogy. It’s a suspenseful adventure. The plague story begun in the first book takes our heroes to Cherigov, a human city overrun by orcs. They must defeat the orc king, or the plague will devastate the land.

City of Cayn by Jason McDonald, Alan Isom, and Stormy McDonald

The Cayn Trilogy Book #2

Introduction

As the novel opens, Jasper enters the domain of the white circle, a guild of mages, looking for a clue to the cure of the plague introduced in the first book of the Cayn trilogy, Son of Cayn. Xandor and his crew follow the caravan that holds the plague to the former human city of Cherigov, now held by orcs. Jasper must find the cure and Xandor must defeat the orcs or the world faces devastation by the wide release of the plague.

Summary

The first book of the trilogy set up this world and began the plague storyline. The main characters in this novel are Jasper the mage, Sehraine the elf magician, Xandor the ranger, Chert the dwarf priest, Yana the wind rider, Grendel the half-orc, and Sacha the conflicted princess. They head to Cherigov to discover the truth about the plague wars of around twenty years ago. Their opponents are Marko the knight-prince, Sacha’s brother, and the orc king. This novel moves quickly with a clear goal in sight. It is a fitting bridge novel by building up the story while setting up a rousing climax in the third volume of the trilogy.

Recommendation

I enjoyed this novel and am looking forward to reading the concluding volume of this trilogy, Blood of Cayn, due out soon.

Son of Cayn by Jason McDonald, Alan Isom, and Stormy McDonald

Son of Cayn by Jason McDonald. The Cayn Trilogy Book #1

Introduction

Xandor the ranger has a mission from Marcus, the leader of the Kral’s Secret Service. Xandor must infiltrate a caravan headed out of the city of Pazard’zhik with his crew including Chert, Jasper, and Grendel. The caravan is smuggling soap. Soap? Yes, soap. Xandor’s crew must determine where and why the soap is being smuggled. The answer to those questions will task his courage and determination.

Summary

Jasper is hired as the caravan’s cook by the caravan leader, Dragahn. Dragahn drives the Chuckwagon and Jasper rides with him. The second wagon is driven by Sachin, the financier of the caravan who has just hired Grendel, a half-orc, as his bodyguard. The third wagon is driven by Pyotr, the horse doctor, with the cook’s helper Lucky sitting by his side. Xandor is a Ranger and Chert is a dwarven cleric. They try to discover the secret of the soap but are unsuccessful before the caravan leaves the city. They follow the caravan trying to complete their mission. The caravan goes through the Plague Lands, into the haunted forest, and approaches its destination.

Xandor and Chert fight deadly foes along the way. The people of the caravan must also contend with Marco the Knight, Kourash who is a beast, and the unnamed villain leader. Secrets are revealed, enemies are uncloaked, and the next book of the series is set up.

Recommendation

Son of Cayn is a brisk and well-drawn adventure quest. The novel was influenced by Dungeons & Dragons. There is a human Ranger, a dwarven cleric, a human mage, a half-orc, trolls, orcs, elves, and other fantastic beasts. The novel reminded me of the first law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie because both series are about a group on a quest and the setting is dark. I like the smuggling soap plotline. It was very inventive. There were a few things that could have been better. It took too long to establish that Marcus sent this crew to investigate the smuggling operation of the caravan. That should’ve been clearer earlier. There were one too many battles with Xander and Chert defeating a fantastic beast. They both almost get killed again and again and Chert heals them back to full health. Xandor’s powers, like the cat thing, appear unestablished.

My main issue was the villain wasn’t revealed until over halfway through the novel. Early viewpoints from the villain would have increased the tension. I like the Russian names and background including the references to the Christian church. The orcs and other beings are referred to as Sons of Cayn which is an interesting background element. I like Xander’s crew and plan to follow them on their next adventure in book 2 of the trilogy.
